The Institute for Public Policy Research has warned that about 8 million British employees are at risk of losing their jobs due to artificial intelligence under current government policies. 




The center explained that artificial intelligence actually affects 11% of the tasks performed by employees in Britain, a number that may rise to approximately 60% if companies integrate this technology into their business in a greater way.

The Institute for Public Policy Research has warned that around 8 million British employees are at risk of losing their jobs due to artificial intelligence under current government policies. 

In a report published today, the research center explained that artificial intelligence already affects 11% of the tasks performed by employees in the United Kingdom, a number that could rise to approximately 60% if companies integrate this technology in a greater way.   Part-time jobs, entry-level jobs, and internal business jobs such as customer service are most at risk, but higher-paying jobs will be affected in a growing way.



The government is betting on artificial intelligence

The findings highlight the difficulties facing the government as it increasingly relies on artificial intelligence to address the problem of poor productivity in the UK.  Businesses across the board are using AI technology to boost efficiency, while UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt announced an £800 million ($1 billion) investment in technology and AI to boost public sector productivity.

He added: “The issue of job losses is not inevitable, as the government, employers and unions have the opportunity to make decisions that allow the adoption of a vital strategy now to ensure that we manage this new technology in a good way.  If they do not take action soon, it may be too late.”

 In its own report published last November, the government acknowledged that AI is already impacting jobs in the finance and insurance sectors.  She called on universities and employers to provide workers with the skills they need to adapt to changes




The impact of the "second wave" on the labor market

 The Public Policy Research Institute report indicated that government policy will be the difference between job losses and economic growth in the context of adopting the use of artificial intelligence.  Separate LinkedIn research showed that Britain lags behind India, the US, Germany, Canada and Israel when it comes to AI skills.  This is because less than half of British companies invest in upskilling their workers, according to Janine Chamberlain, UK regional director for the recruitment-focused social media platform. 

32 out of every 10,000 LinkedIn members in the UK have artificial intelligence skills, including machine learning or architecture.  Even though that number has doubled since 2016, it remains “relatively small,” Chamberlain explained in an interview in London.

 

Biggest losers

Women and young people may be at greater risk of exclusion due to AI.  Women are disproportionately employed in those tasks that are most affected by this technology, while companies can hire fewer new graduate positions and rely more on artificial intelligence to perform entry-level tasks. 

The Institute for Public Policy Research says the government should develop an industrial AI strategy to support job transformation and distribute the gains of automation across the economy, rather than just a few companies.   Recommendations include providing financial incentives to increase rather than eliminate jobs, regulatory changes, and support for green jobs that are less vulnerable to automation. 

 Investing in skills development within an organization has traditionally been seen as a good thing,” concluded Chamberlain, and with the incorporation of generative AI, it is now “essential. ”  In any organization it is about understanding what skills I have, identifying what skills I need and how to fill that gap, and the same applies across the entire country.
