Understanding the social interactions of animals is fundamental to the study of their behavior and its implications for neuroscience and ecology. Scientists at the Brain Cognition and Brain Disease Institute (BCBDI) of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have introduced a new method called Social Behavior Atlas (SBeA) that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to track and analyze Behavior of many animals in three dimensions (3D). .



This study, published in Nature Machine Intelligence, presents a new approach to analyzing the behavior of different animals. Unlike traditional methods that require predefined categories of social behaviors, the SBeA framework uses an artificial intelligence algorithm that learns incrementally. This algorithm can accurately identify similar-looking animals with greater than 90% accuracy, enabling the discovery of previously undefined differences in animals' social behavior.


One of the main advantages of the SBeA framework is its ability to synthesize large amounts of data and train models with greater precision. According to Wei Pengfei, co-author of the study, this allows for a more accurate assessment of three-dimensional social gestures.


The
SBeA technology is particularly effective in calculating three-dimensional social posture, identifying individual animals and analyzing the subtle social interactions of various species such as mice, birds and domestic dogs. Furthermore, its potential for cross-species applications opens up new opportunities for studying the social behavior of different animal species.
